In a lot of Worcester-area basements, the sump pump is the only thing standing between a dry floor and a flood during the spring thaw. Pumps fail most often exactly when they're needed: during a storm that has also knocked out the power.
A company can check whether your existing pump is sized for how much water the pit actually collects, replace a worn pump, and add a battery backup or a second pump that kicks in if the first one fails. A high-water alarm is a cheap addition that warns you before water reaches the floor. In winter, a discharge line that runs out onto the lawn can freeze solid and send water straight back into the pit, so ask about a freeze-protected outlet. If the water is being dumped next to the foundation, it's probably coming right back in, and rerouting it can fix the problem on its own.
